The name Bussero derives from buxus, an evergreen shrub, which is also the basis of a common Lombard surname.

Bussero: history, beauty and modernity in Lombardy.

History

The area was already populated in Roman times and in 1906 a female sarcophagus belonging to that period was found. The city of Bussero gave its name to a prominent family in Milan, which founded the San Barnaba hospital in 1145, and of which Pagano, podestà in 1212, was also a part.

Monuments and places of interest

Bussero boasts numerous elegant and refined villas and palaces. Among the villas, there is Villa Sioli Legnani, renovated in the mid-nineteenth century, Villa Berti, of eighteenth-century origin, and Villa Tamassia Radaelli, dating back to the early eighteenth century. Villa Casnati is the oldest villa, dating back to 1541, and it also has a park. In 2020, a modern auditorium and a sports hall were inaugurated, after 15 years of stalled construction sites.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms of Bussero recalls the three feudal families of the village: the de Bussero, the Olgiati, and the Greppi di Bussero. The two stars in the upper part of the interzato come from the Bussero family coat of arms, while the fish figure introduced in the lower part comes from the Olgiati family coat of arms. The lily in the central band of the interzato is instead taken from the Greppi di Bussero coat of arms.

Bussero is a municipality in continuous demographic growth, from 518 inhabitants in 1751 to 1,412 inhabitants in 1859.
