History

The town of Buonabitacolo was founded on November 2, 1333 by Guglielmo Sanseverino, lord of Padula, Sanza and the county of Policastro. The act of foundation was stipulated during the reign of Roberto d'Angiò, in the San Giacomo Palace in Padula, in the presence of some important people of the time.

Guglielmo chose the name Buonabitacolo for the new settlement due to the healthy air and its distance from the infected swamps that spread through Vallo di Diano. In the latter part of the century, Buonabitacolo remained under the dominion of the Sanseverino family. It was in 1407 that Ladislao I of Naples stripped Ottaviano Sanseverino of his fiefs because of his rebellion and granted them to an armiger named Russo de Specchio in exchange for services rendered to the crown.
