Today I will talk about Mezzolara (or "L'Amzulera", as it is called in the rustic eastern dialects of Bologna), the most populous hamlet of the municipality of Budrio, located in the beautiful province of Bologna. History
There are several hypotheses about the origin of the toponym. However, according to scholars, the name probably derives from the "massa" (i.e. an agricultural estate) of a certain Mozolario. The territory originally depended on Ravenna and the Parish of San Martino in Argine, and then passed to the possessions of Bologna around 1100. The center was crossed by the Idice stream, until 1816 when it was diverted eastward to the locality of Roversella.
Monuments and places of interest
The Church of San Michele Arcangelo, dating back to the thirteenth century, is one of the most important monuments of Mezzolara. It was located on the left bank of the Idice and was rebuilt several times over the centuries. Inside it, you can admire a work of art by Denijs Calvaert. In addition, there is the Hospice of Vulpino, a historic place of assistance and hospitality for the local community and for travelers who crossed the Idice stream on their way to Molinella, San Martino in Argine, and Durazzo. The Complex of Villa Rusconi, dating back to the late fifteenth century, but heavily renovated in the nineteenth century, is another place of interest in the area.
Infrastructure and transport
Mezzolara has its own railway station along the Bologna-Portomaggiore railway line, which facilitates connections with the capital and other localities of the province.
