Budrio, the city of Ocarina and history.

Origin of the name

The name Budrio derives from the pre-Latin word "Butrium", which means "ravine, slope". This word in turn comes from ancient Greek "βόθρος" which means "pit".

History

From its origins to Italian unification

The origins of Budrio are very ancient. The town was probably founded by the Umbrians, but the oldest signs of civilization date back to Roman times. The municipal territory was subject to the so-called "centuriation", that is, it was divided into plots of land granted to Roman legionnaires to reward them for their services. The regular structure, with straight and perpendicular lines, of the centuriation is still clearly visible by looking at the Budrio countryside from the air, because the Roman boundaries and irrigation canals have never been entirely abandoned. From findings in the surrounding area, it is believed that the original nucleus of modern Budrio dates back to the 10th-11th century. The church of San Lorenzo was already in operation in 1146.

From Italian Unification to today

Giuseppe Barilli (1812), who under the pseudonym Quirico Filopanti was appointed in 1860 Professor of Mechanics and Hydraulics at the University of Bologna, was born in Budrio. Barilli is known for having invented time zones. In addition, Ettore Guizzardi, famous for his participation in the Peking to Paris Race as mechanic and driver of the legendary "Itala", was born in Budrio.

Budrio and its Ocarina

The Ocarina is the most famous musical instrument of Budrio. This wind instrument was invented at the beginning of the 1900s by the Budrio native Giuseppe Donati. His Ocarina has been appreciated by musicians from all over the world and is still used today in many orchestras and bands. Budrio also hosts the Ocarina Museum, a place where you can admire a vast collection of this musical instrument.

Conclusions

Budrio is a small town that has a lot to offer. Its history is rich in events and its traditions are deeply rooted. If you have the opportunity to visit this city, do not miss the chance to do so. You can discover the famous Ocarina and appreciate the beauty of this place.
