Economy and Culture

A major hub of industrial production

Turin is famous for being one of Italy's major hubs of industrial production, along with Milan and Genoa. In fact, during the years of the Italian Economic Miracle, these three cities formed the famous industrial triangle. Today, Turin is still very important from an economic point of view, but has diversified its industrial production, becoming a center of excellence for many sectors, including cinema, fashion, and artificial intelligence.

Cultural and artistic richness

Not only industrial production, however. Turin is also an important university, artistic, and cultural hub. In fact, the city boasts numerous universities, museums, theaters, and tourist areas. Moreover, there are areas in the Turin territory that have been recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

History

From the Taurini to the modern city

The history of Turin is two millennia old and fascinating. It was founded around the 3rd century BC by the Taurini and later transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus in the 1st century BC. After the Ostrogoth domination, it became the capital of the Duchy of Turin and then of the Marquisate of Turin, under the nominal lordship of the House of Savoy in the 11th century. In 1563 it became the capital and from 1720 it was the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia, later becoming the first capital of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861.

Physical Geography

The location of Turin

Turin is located in the Po Valley, delimited by the rivers Stura di Lanzo, Sangone, and Po. The city faces the mouth of some alpine valleys: Val di Susa, Valli di Lanzo, and Val Sangone. The presence of these alpine valleys, as well as the proximity to the Frejus tunnels link it to France.

In conclusion, Turin is a city with many facets, offering a lot from an economic, cultural, and artistic point of view. You can admire the city's historical heritage, which tells its evolution from its origins to the present day, and taste the Piedmontese culinary specialties, such as gianduiotti, grissini, and espresso coffee. Don't miss the opportunity to visit this wonderful city which, thanks to its constant growth of importance at the international level, has become a true global city.
