Brunello

Brunello: a small town with an ancient history

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk about Brunello, a lovely town in the province of Varese in Lombardy, where I have been living for a few years. Brunello currently has 969 inhabitants, and the town center is located 411 meters above sea level, about 8 kilometers from the center of Varese.

Origins of the name

The name Brunello seems to derive from the plum tree, called "prugnello" or "prunello" in Italian. According to some scholars, instead, Brunello was a fiefdom of the Bossi family, who built the parish church next to their residence. In fact, the emblems of the Bossi counts, including the "bue novello" (young ox), can still be seen on the walls of the church and the monastic house.

Brunello, history and beauties of a Lombardian municipality.

History

The year of the foundation of the parish of Brunello is not known for certain, but it is known that the parish church was consecrated by Bishop Melchiorre Crivelli on October 16, 1545. The construction of the building probably took less than 150 years.

Monuments and points of interest

The church of Santa Maria Annunciata is one of the architectural gems of the town. Important frescoes, a testimony to the local artistic culture, can be found inside. Furthermore, the church of San Rocco is worth a visit for its architecture and its history.

Society

The population of Brunello experienced a constant demographic growth until 2008, when it reached its historical peak of 1061 inhabitants. From that moment on, the population decreased, reaching 969 inhabitants in 2018.

Administration

Currently, the town of Brunello is governed by Mayor Luigi Rossi and its town council.

Notes

If you are in the vicinity of Varese, I recommend visiting Brunello and discovering its history and beauty. We look forward to welcoming you!
