UNESCO Heritage

Turin is a city rich in history and culture. In fact, there are several areas and buildings within its territory included in two properties protected by UNESCO: some palaces and areas belonging to the circuit of Savoy residences in Piedmont (World Heritage Site) and the Po Hills area (Biosphere Reserve). The city is one of the major centers of universities, art, tourism, science, and culture in Italy.

Turin has a two-thousand-year history and was founded around the 3rd century BC by the Taurini. Later, it was transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus in the 1st century BC. Over the centuries, the city passed under various dominations, including those of the Ostrogoths and the House of Savoy. In 1563, Turin became its capital and from 1720 it was the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia. In 1861, Turin was also the first capital of the Kingdom of Italy until 1865.

In 2021, Turin was chosen as the headquarters of the ATP Finals and in 2022 it was chosen as the headquarters of the Eurovision Song Contest 2022.

Food, Fashion, and Industries

Turin is famous for some "made in Italy" delicacies such as vermouth, Gianduiotti, grissini, and espresso coffee. In addition, the city is the hub of the Italian automotive industry, publishing, information technology, banking and insurance, space sector (astronomy), industrial design, sports, fashion, and artificial intelligence.

Physical Geography

Territory

The city of Turin is located in the plain delimited by three rivers: the Stura di Lanzo, the Sangone, and the Po. The latter crosses the city from south to north. The city is located in front of some alpine valleys such as the Val di Susa, which connects the city with nearby France through the Frejus tunnels (Frejus railway tunnel and Frejus road tunnel), the Lanzo Valleys, and the Val Sangone.
