Brolo: A millenary history between sea and hills.

Origin of the name

Did you know that the name Brolo derives from the term ''Brolium'', which in low Latin meant ''park'' or ''garden''? This term refers to the origin of the city, when the territory was a vast agricultural park.

History

Origins

From reconstructions, we know that the territory of Brolo was crossed by the main road of the island, which led from northern Sicily from east to west. The territory was a fundamental part of what Marco Porcio Catone, several centuries earlier, had called the "grainery of the Roman people".

Middle Ages

The medieval castle of Brolo was built almost on the sea, protecting the city from pirate attacks. The fishing village that developed near the castle was known in Norman times as ''Voab'', a term inherited from the previous Arab domination and whose meaning is "marine fortress".

Conclusions

Here is everything you need to know about Brolo! A charming city with a thousand-year-old history, between Rome's granary and medieval castles. Don't miss the opportunity to visit this municipality of the metropolitan city of Messina, which will surprise you with its scenic beauty and the picturesque atmosphere of the fishing village.
