Brissago-Valtravaglia

Welcome to Brissago Valtravaglia, a municipality in the province of Varese in Lombardy!

Located in the beautiful Valtravaglia, Brissago Valtravaglia is an Italian municipality with 1,215 inhabitants. Its history dates back to prehistoric times when the area was inhabited by hunters, farmers, and fishermen. The first known municipal organization dates back to the 13th century, when the Duchy of Milan was divided into counties, which in turn were divided into parishes, and the autonomous municipalities of Brissago and Roggiano were part of the Val Travaglia parish.

The merger and the municipal coat of arms

In the 20th century, the municipal territory was redefined several times, and on December 1, 1927, Royal Decree No. 2343 authorized the merger of the municipalities of Brissago, Roggiano, and Mesenzana into the new municipality of Brissago Valtravaglia. This merger was mainly driven by local administrations for economic reasons.

The municipal coat of arms, adopted by Podestà (fascism) resolution on May 28, 1929 and approved by the king the following year, has the following blazon:

The municipal territory includes the capital Brissago and the hamlets of Monte San Michele, Motto Inferiore, Motto Superiore, Novello, Piano, and Roggiano (already an autonomous municipality, annexed in 1927). The demographic evolution shows a constant growth in population, which goes from 281 in 1805 to 622 in 1921.
