Brignano Gera d'Adda

Welcome to Brignano Gera d'Adda!

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Brignano Gera d'Adda, a town in the province of Bergamo in Lombardy, where I grew up. This village has an interesting history that stretches back to the 1st century BC when numerous Ambroxian settlements were established in the area. But let's focus on more recent history...

History

The history of Brignano intersects with that of the Visconti family dating back to 1186 when Federico Barbarossa granted them the territory as a fief. After passing to the Della Torre family, it returned to the Visconti's possession in 1310. Sagramoro I Visconti, the natural son of Bernabò Visconti and Montanina de Lazzari, was legitimized by his father and became the feudal lord of Brignano Gera d'Adda in 1380, becoming the progenitor of the Visconti of Brignano's dynastic line. The Visconti's dominion was consolidated by the construction of the Bergamo ditch, which delimited Brignano's territories to the north and east.

The last descendant of the Visconti of Brignano, Antonietta Visconti Sauli or Aimi, ended this dynastic line with her death in 1892. Some authors have recognized Francesco Bernardino Visconti as the Innominato in Alessandro Manzoni's novel.
