Bressana Bottarone is an Italian municipality in the province of Pavia, Lombardy, with 3,427 inhabitants. Its name in the Oltrepadano dialect is Barsàna Butaron and it is located in the plain of Oltrepò Pavese, on the right side of the Po River, near the confluence of the Coppa stream. The city has a rather interesting history, including the birth of politician Agostino Depretis.

History

Agostino Depretis was born in Bressana Bottarone on January 31, 1813, and was eight times Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Italy between 1876 and 1887. The municipality of Bressana Bottarone was established in 1928 with the suppressed municipalities of Bottarone and Bressana (R.D. 10 August 1928, n. 2044). The city was governed by a podestà until the reform of the municipal organization in 1946. In 1971, the city of Bressana Bottarone had an area of 1,305 hectares.

The Bressana Bottarone town hall was built in 1937, while the variant of the Strada statale 35 dei Giovi, which previously crossed Bressana, was completed between 1929 and 1931. The city's church was built in 1844 and expanded with the addition of two side aisles in 1922-25. It was declared an autonomous branch in 1844 and a parish with episcopal decree on February 6, 1953.

Symbols

The coat of arms and gonfalone of Bressana Bottarone were granted by the President of the Republic decree on 29 July 1993. The coat of arms features a reproduction of the castle of Argine, the letter B, the initial of the toponym, and three stars symbolizing the three main fractions that form the municipality: Bressana, Bottarone, and Argine. The gonfalone is a white flag.

Monuments and Places of Interest

Bressana Bottarone has several monuments ranging from the historical castle of Argine to the parish church of San Giovanni Battista. The castle of Argine was built in the Middle Ages and is located in the homonymous fraction of the municipality. The building is not far from the course of the Coppa di Argine stream, in the open Padan plain. The parish church of San Giovanni Battista was built in 1844 and later expanded to meet the needs of the growing population.

Bressana Bottarone is also well connected by its roads. The city is crossed by the Strada statale 35 dei Giovi and the provincial road 188 which crosses the center of the city.

A.S.D. Bressana 1918 is the local football team that plays in the Promozione (football) championship. The team plays its home matches at the Bressana Bottarone municipal stadium, which has a capacity of 500 spectators.
