Brentino Belluno: history and beauty of Veneto

Origins of the name

The name Brentino Belluno derives from the two hamlets that are part of it, Brentino and Belluno Veronese. The Municipal seat, instead, is located in Rivalta. The origin of the name Brentino could derive from the Germanic term "brenta" or "brento", which means "basin" or "water basin", while Belluno could share the etymology with the homonymous Venetian Municipality, or derive from the Celtic base "bel", which means "shining".

History

The territory of the Municipality of Brentino Belluno has been inhabited since prehistoric times and was particularly important as a transit point between the Po Valley and Germany in Roman times. In fact, the presence of the Adige river made it necessary to bypass the Ceraino lock in overland routes, anticipating the path of the Via Claudia Augusta.

Some scattered findings dating back to prehistoric times are found between the hamlets of the Municipality. The oldest ones date back to the Middle Paleolithic, including a large engraved stone found in a stable near Belluno.

Conclusions

Brentino Belluno is a Municipality of great charm, rich in history and natural beauty. Thanks to its geographical location, it is an ideal place for mountain excursions or to visit the medieval villages nearby.
