The history of Bregnano

Bregnano has a lot of history behind it. Its oldest historical attestation dates back to the 9th century, when the locality was known as "Beroniano". In the 12th century, the town was involved in disputes between Como and Milan and was placed under ecclesiastical jurisdiction as a fiefdom of the Diocese of Como Ardizzone di Castello. Over the centuries, Bregnano became part of the feudal possessions of the Carcano family, but in 1751 it was freed from feudalism and subjected to a fifteen-year payment for its "redemption". Later, the territorial compartment of the Duchy of Milan of 1756 indicated Bregnano, Puginate and Cassina Manigardi as a single municipality.

Bregnano had a castle in the 12th century, situated in the context of the disputes between Como and Milan. In this context, Alberico, one of the commanders of the Milanese side who distinguished himself in the battle of Montesordo in 1126, was a resident of Bregnano. Over thirty years later, Bregnano became a fiefdom of the Bishop of Como, Ardizzone.
