Breganze

Welcome to Breganze: an introduction to the municipality

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Breganze, a beautiful municipality in the Veneto region located in the province of Vicenza. With its 8,504 inhabitants, Breganze is situated in the Vicentine Prealps, divided between hills and plains, at the foot of the Asiago Plateau. It is an industrious and viticultural place that produces DOC wines and is located in the tourist area of the Pedemontana Veneta. It is particularly famous for the mechanical industry of Laverda (company) (now AGCO), Moto Laverda, Faresin industries and the headquarters of Diesel (brand), which produces well-known fashion brands.

But let's now explore the territory of Breganze in more detail!

Physical geography: the beauty of nature

The territory of Breganze extends in one of the most beautiful positions of the province of Vicenza, between the Astico and Laverda Valleys. The main town is located at the confluence of the Chiavone Bianco with the Chiavone Nero, where the sloping foothills of the Plateau of the Seven Municipalities reach the vast Vicenza plain. The southern part of the territory, where the villages of Mirabella and Maragnole are located, is flat and of alluvial origin, while the northern part is hilly and largely volcanic.

The most important watercourses are the Astico, Chiavone Bianco and Chiavone Nero rivers, which divide the hilly area into three ridges crossed by as many roads. Almost downstream, the Chiavone Bianco marks the limit of the last hills and then bends towards the east to meet the Chiavone Nero and flow into the Laverda at Maragnole. Once, the Maglio ditch, fed by the waters of the Astico taken south of the Nodari paper mill bridge between Lugo di Vicenza and Zugliano, was of great importance for artisanal and agricultural purposes.

The climate of the area is continental, with 4 well-defined seasons and characterized by some local microclimates. The territory is known to be subject to strong fogs in winter, but on the southern exposed hilly area, temperatures tend to be milder. Snow usually falls between the end of November and March, while summer is hot and humid, but often subject to strong, passing storms.

Breganze: nature, history, and typical productions.

Origins of the name: a bit of history

But where does the name "Breganze" come from? Its origin is uncertain. According to some, the toponym could derive from the anthroponym "Brigantia", a Gallic personal name, while for others it could derive from the Celtic "brigant", meaning eminent, elevated. A final hypothesis suggests that the etymology of the name may be similar to that of Bressanvido and that is, deriving from "praedium Cantii", "Cantius's" farm, according to legend a veteran of Caesar.

Work and production

As I have already mentioned, Breganze is known for its production of DOC wines and the presence of important mechanical industries such as Laverda and Moto Laverda, as well as Diesel, a well-known fashion brand. In addition, the territory is characterized by a strong agricultural and artisanal activity, which contributes to the production of high-quality products.

What to see in Breganze

Breganze is a municipality rich in tourist attractions. Among the places of greatest interest is certainly Villa Angarano, a 16th-century building located in a magnificent park. The villa is surrounded by vineyards that produce the famous white wine Vespaiolo di Breganze DOCG and hosts a series of cultural events throughout the year, such as art exhibitions and concerts.

Another interesting stop is the Museum of Peasant Civilization, where you can discover the life and traditions of our grandparents. Here you can find tools and objects used in daily life, testimonies of a distant but still alive past in the memory of the people of Breganze.

Finally, it is worth visiting the church of Sant'Agata, located in the historic center of the town. Built in the 18th century, the church is known for its scenic dome and its interior, decorated with stuccoes and paintings.
