Villafontana

Welcome to Villafontana

Hello everyone! Today we will talk about Villafontana, a small town located in the province of Verona, divided between the municipalities of Bovolone, Oppeano and Isola della Scala. The first thing that catches the eye is that the village extends over a vast plain, characterized by numerous cultivated fields and some woods.

History of Villafontana

The town is rich in history, and although there are not many sources that talk about it, we can affirm that its history is very similar to that of Bovolone. It is presumed that the first settlements in this area date back to after the year One Thousand.

The name of the town would derive from the numerous springs present on the ground or should owe its origin to the noble Veronese family of Fontana, which owned a villa in the center of the town. The first document testifying to the existence of Villafontana dates back to 1573, when the Bishop of Verona, Agostino Valerio, established the Rectorate of Sant'Agostino. At the end of the sixteenth century, the town had about three hundred inhabitants.

The structure of Villafontana

The town develops along the SP2, a provincial road that connects Verona to Legnago. The urban structure of Villafontana is very interesting, and gives us an idea of what the town was like during the Renaissance. The central nucleus of the town consisted of sixteen masonry buildings as well as eight other straw houses.

The church was located at the northern end of the town, at the beginning of the road to Vallese. On the south bank of the road, there was the large courtyard of Cavalier Redolfo, known for its wooden hydraulic machine that allowed water to be lifted from the Brenzona canal to irrigate the meadows.

Villafontana in the eighteenth century

In the eighteenth century, Villafontana appeared similar to how we know it today, with numerous courtyards partially enclosed by merlons. Among these are Hieronimo Rizzon's and Mr. Caprini's. There was also the mill with two wheels, owned by Messer Alessandro Cuin.

Villafontana is a place rich in history and culture. To discover more, I recommend visiting the church of Sant'Agostino, built in the eighteenth century, and the Tower of Cavalier Redolfo, which offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding plain.

Conclusions

Villafontana is a small town that deserves to be discovered in every corner. Its interesting history and unique urban structure make it a place to visit. Come and visit us, we will be happy to welcome you to our community!
