Castellar

Castellar: a small hamlet in Boves

If you are looking for a quiet and relaxing place in Piedmont, Castellar is the hamlet for you! Located in the town of Boves, a few kilometers from Cuneo, this hamlet has about 250 inhabitants and is nestled in the Colla valley, between the Maritime Alps.

Origins of Castellar

Also known as ''Cappella Nuova'', this hamlet takes its name from the church built in the 19th century for preaching purposes. The Colla valley had been hit by an avalanche that had destroyed several areas, including the one where Castellar would later arise. Thanks to the reconstruction of the church, a symbol of the community of those few valley dwellers, the hamlet began to expand.

During the 20th century, following World War II, Castellar grew considerably, both in terms of demographics and economics. Commercial establishments, such as the tobacco - grocery store and the bakery, were built to meet the needs of the valley's inhabitants. Additionally, the church was expanded and renovated. The public elementary school, attended by children from the hamlet and nearby hamlets, was also operational until the end of the 20th century.

Commemorative Monuments

Like many other areas in Piedmont, Castellar suffered the consequences of World War II. Intense battles between partisans and Germans took place in this hamlet, leading to the deaths of many civilians and soldiers.

The elementary school houses two memorials for war victims, honoring those who died as a result of the reprisals. Additionally, on the left side of the road, before reaching the center of the hamlet, there is a memorial in remembrance of the events that occurred in that very spot.

Another poignant testimony to the hamlet's past is the monument dedicated to Ignazio Vian, built on the hill above the aforementioned memorial, in honor of the resistance that took place in the valley.

Conclusions

Castellar, with its church, stone houses, and surrounding mountains, is a truly charming place. If you are looking for a destination to relax and enjoy nature, Castellar is definitely worth considering.
