Boscotrecase has a very ancient history, dating back to Roman times. The entire area was known as Pagus Felix Suburbanus and was the scene of the construction of numerous otium villas. Among the most important archaeological discoveries, there is that of the villa of Marco Vipsanio Agrippa Postumo, son of Marco Vipsanio Agrippa, trusted friend of Augustus, and Giulia Maggiore, daughter of the emperor himself.
With the eruption of Vesuvius in 79, the territory of Boscotrecase was abandoned for a long period and covered by a dense forest, which earned it the nickname ''Silva mala''. Only in the year 1000 is there news of a church dedicated to San Gennaro, which was part of the fief of the baron of Ottaviano. Subsequently, the territory passed under the control of Frederick II of Swabia, who used it as a hunting reserve.
During the Middle Ages, the territory of Boscotrecase changed ownership frequently, passing from the possession of the barons of Ottaviano to that of the King of Naples. In 1337, Robert of Anjou detached a large territorial zone from the territory of Ottaviano, which was later donated to the three female monasteries of the Basilica of Santa Chiara, the Church of Santa Maria Egiziaca a Forcella, and Santa Maria Maddalena.
