Bosconero

Bosconero: the small municipality at the base of Canavese

Bosconero is an Italian municipality located in the metropolitan city of Turin, in Piedmont. The town is located in the lower Canavese, a hilly area of Piedmont, not far from the banks of the Orco stream and from the State Road 460 of Ceresole.

History

The first documents attesting to the existence of Bosconero date back to 882, when the village was known as Roveredum. The area where Bosconero was located was rich in Quercus petraea, Pinophyta and Quercus cerris trees, which had a dark wood. The forest was called by the Romans Fullicia and Gerulfia, and the territory began to be called "Bosco-nigro."

Only starting from the 11th century, thanks to the nearby Fruttuaria Abbey founded in the nearby village of San Benigno Canavese, the village began to grow. The population expanded thanks to the arrival of many farmers who turned the forests into cultivable land. However, the frequent floods of the Orco river caused the entire urban agglomeration to move about two kilometers beyond the river banks in the 14th century.

The two small hamlets of Bosco Negro and Lotti were born as fractions under Rivarolo, belonging to the marquisate of Filippo San Martino di Agliè. It was only in 1694 that the two fractions merged to form the municipality of Bosconero.

Like many of the towns in Canavese, Bosconero became famous for the cultivation and production of textile hemp. Today, some historical remains remain in the Gerbido park where you can still see the drying pits of the textile thread, called "canavere" in the local dialect.
