The Foundation of Bosco Marengo
According to tradition, Bosco Marengo was founded by Theodoric the Great in 498: this Ostrogothic sovereign was already settled in the castle of Marengo. After the barbarian dominations, in the last years of the 1st millennium, the Emperor Otto I of Saxony granted Bosco to Aleramo of Monferrato. From Anselmo III, nephew of the first Anselmo son of Aleramo, was born Ugo, first Marchesato of Bosco and Marchesato of Ponzone.
The Domination of the Duchy of Milan
The powerful Marchesato of Bosco lasted until 1350 when it passed under the dominion of the Signoria of Milan, ruled by the Visconti. Later, the territory was contested between the Municipality of Alessandria and Genoa, and the marquises had to repeatedly swear submission. The decay of the marquises of Bosco and Ponzone was caused by the progressive fractionation of feudal goods among different dynastic lines.
The Battle of Bosco Marengo
On October 18, 1447, the Battle of Bosco Marengo took place, in which the French army clashed with that of the Duchy of Milan. Thanks to the intervention of the boschesi, the victory went to Bartolomeo Colleoni, who was remembered for posterity on a plaque placed on the walls of the Sforza Castle in Milan as a testament to the valor and loyalty of the people of Bosco.
