The Physical Geography of Bosco Chiesanuova

Bosco Chiesanuova is located at an altitude of about 1000 metres and is the second-highest municipal capital in Verona after Erbezzo. It is 31 kilometres from Verona and borders the province of Trento. There are two parts of the territory: a populated area in the south and one in the north with pastures for summer alpine grazing and winter ski fields, such as in the nearby locality of Malga San Giorgio. Recently, this area has been closed due to mafia infiltration.

The History of Bosco Chiesanuova

Bosco Chiesanuova has an ancient history: there were human settlements from the Paleolithic period, such as in Lughezzano and San Giorgio. The latter locality is particularly important because, at an altitude of about 1500 metres, it was a crucial route for crossing the area without major natural obstacles. As I was saying, the entire Lessinia and perhaps even Monte Baldo supplied flint to the whole of Europe.

The municipality became important at the time of the Thirteen Communes: two of the Cimbrian communes, Frizzolana (the current capital) and Valdiporro, settled in its territory. Many names of the hamlets testify to the Cimbrian past of the territory, such as Porretal, Der, Tander, Scioster, Ghert, Grietz, etc. Previously, the area of Frizzolana was dominated by three abbeys and the area specialized in the production of white coal.

The relationship between the rulers and the Cimbrian communes was always based on high levels of freedom; for example, in 1326, Cangrande della Scala granted Frizzolana exemption from some taxes in exchange for a commitment to defending the borders. Until around 1650, the administrative structure was based on a massaro, a sort of mayor assisted by four advisers each appointed by the hamlets, among which was Erbezzo, which at that time did not have administrative autonomy. The end of the strong autonomy of Bosco, like that of the entire Cimbrian community, coincided with the Napoleonic rule, which in the Verona area cancelled the independent mountain communities and the still-existing abbey structures.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Bosco Chiesanuova is a magical and suggestive place, where you can breathe the air of the mountains and ancient history. Come and discover this municipality and let yourself be enchanted by its beauty. Here you will also find many outdoor activities, such as trekking, skiing, and mountain biking, to fully enjoy this wonderful area of Valpantena.
