Borutta

Welcome to Borutta!

Hello everyone, today I will tell you about Borutta, a small municipality located in the province of Sassari, in the historical region of Meilogu. With only 254 inhabitants, it is a truly characteristic and peaceful place, where you feel at home.

The meaning of the name

The town, known in the past as Gruta due to the presence of numerous natural caves, later changed its name to Borutta, probably in the dialect form "Borùta".

The history of Borutta

The territory of Borutta extends along the valley of the Frida river, south of Mount Pelau. The ancient natural cave of Ulari, inhabited since the late Neolithic period, represents the oldest evidence of human presence in the area. In the Middle Ages, Borutta and Sorres were part of the Giudicato of Torres, and after its fall, passed to the lordship of the Doria and later to the Aragonese, who made it a feud. In 1503, the diocese of Sorres was suppressed and joined to that of Sassari. In 1750, it was incorporated into the Marquisate of Valdecalzana, granted to the Martinez and then to the De Queralt. In 1839, following the suppression of the feudal system, it was ransomed. In 1946, Borutta elected its first female mayor, Ninetta Bartoli, who held this position for twelve years.

The symbols of Borutta

The coat of arms and the banner of Borutta were granted by decree of the President of the Republic in 2006. The banner is white.

Monuments and points of interest

Among the monuments of Borutta we find the famous Pisan Romanesque cathedral of San Pietro di Sorres. Built between the 12th and 13th centuries, it has been recognized as a national monument since 1894. Since 1950, the church and the adjacent monastery have been home to a community of Benedictine monks. In addition, there is also the oratory of Santa Croce, which dates back to the 12th century but has been renovated until the mid-twentieth century. It was the original rectory of the town dedicated to Santa Maria Maddalena, a title carried by the current parish church.

Borutta is a beautiful place full of history. If you're looking for a place to relax and breathe the air of ancient traditions, this is the right place for you. I highly recommend visiting it and discovering the beauty of its monuments and the friendliness of its inhabitants. Welcome to Borutta!
