Torano
Welcome to Torano!
Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Torano, a beautiful hamlet of the municipality of Borgorose, in the province of Rieti, in Lazio. Torano has about 700 inhabitants and is located at an altitude of 725 meters, at the foot of the Duchessa Mountains and Mount Velino. It is a very visible location from the A24 and A25 motorways, and geographically it is divided into two parts: "la Piazza" and "la Villa", separated by the hill on which the tower stands.
The history of Torano
The name of Torano derives from Massa Torana, a large agricultural estate of high medieval origin named after the ancient city of Tora. Torano was the subject of disputes between the Savelli and Orsini families, who vied for possession of it. In 1381, the battle fought between the Aquilani, led by the Camponeschi, and the Pretatti was won by the former only thanks to the assistance provided by the Orsini militias. Later, Torano passed to the Colonna counts, then to the Duchy of Tagliacozzo until 1520, when it was granted by the Colonna to the Caffarelli of Rome.
The earthquake of the Marsica in 1915 razed the old village, located on the hill where the tower stands, to the ground, and it had to be abandoned and rebuilt further downstream.
What to visit in Torano
Torano boasts numerous monuments and places of interest. The symbol of the village is the 14th century Tower, the only survivor of the old village along with part of the city walls. Within the village, there are also the churches of San Martino, San Pietro and San Sebastiano (deconsecrated). The Church of San Martino features a portal dating back to 1462, signed by Tommaso da Biasca, and inside it preserves two statues from the 14th and 15th centuries. Recent excavations have uncovered pre-Romanesque walls.
The culture of Torano
The dialect of Torano belongs to the Aquilano-Cicolano-Reatino group of the Sabine dialect, belonging to the median Italian dialects. The village celebrates two patron saints annually: Maria on August 15th, and San Nicola da Tolentino on September 10th.
How to get to Torano
Torano is an important road junction for the entire Abruzzo and the province of Rieti. In fact, the A24 motorway (Rome-L'Aquila-Teramo), from which the A25 motorway for Avezzano and Pescara branches off through the directional junction of Torano, runs very close to the village.
