The urban center is surrounded by several mountains, which offer breathtaking views of the surrounding natural landscapes. To the north are the villages of Collemaggiore, Pagliara, and Colleviati-Villette, while the comune's main town, Borgorose, is about two and a half kilometers away.

Origins of the Name

Although precise sources on the origin of the name Castelmenardo have not been found, it is believed that the toponym derives from the name of one of the noble members of the Berardi family, lords of the County of Marsi, or from that of a supporter of Charlemagne, Minardo or Menardo.

History

The territory of Castelmenardo was already frequented in Roman times, being one of the main castles of the Salto Valley located in the area of passage of the ancient Cicolana road. In the Middle Ages, the village enjoyed its autonomy thanks to the local universitas, also controlling the neighboring centers of Collemaggiore, Pagliara, Colleviati-Villette, and Ponte Ospedale.

During the 19th century, Castelmenardo was involved in the events related to the Italian post-unification Brigandage, in which Berardino Viola, together with other brigands from Cicolano, Marsica, and Conca Aquilana, founded the "Cartore gang."

Monuments and Places of Interest

Among Castelmenardo's religious monuments, the Church of Santa Croce stands out, a place of worship mentioned for the first time in an ecclesiastical document of the 14th century. The church was probably built on the site of a pre-existing medieval fortification.

In Summary

Castelmenardo is an ancient and stunningly beautiful village immersed in nature among the peaks of the Duchessa mountains. With a millenary history and still lively social life, Castelmenardo is a perfect place to spend a relaxing day discovering the natural and historical beauties of Lazio.
