Borgorose, or Ju Bùrgu in the Sabine dialect, is an Italian municipality located in the Salto Valley, in the province of Rieti, on the border with Abruzzo. With its 4,224 inhabitants, Borgorose is a town full of history and natural beauty.

Physical geography

The territory of Borgorose is located in the inland of the central Apennines and is surrounded by the Carseolani Mountains to the west, the Marsica to the south, and the Cicolano Mountains to the north. It is also included in the Montagne della Duchessa Regional Reserve, located on the border with the Sirente-Velino Regional Natural Park.

The territory can be divided into a foothill inhabited area and a mountainous area along the Monti della Duchessa, where the Lago della Duchessa is also located. The climate is typically continental with strong temperature variations and, in the mountainous areas, winter snowfalls and precipitation are recorded.

History

The center of Borgorose was inhabited in prehistoric times by the Aborigines, then occupied by the Sabines and the Equi, who were subdued by Roman colonists during the Roman Republic along with the Marsi in nearby Fucino. In the Sant'Anatolia fraction, there was the ancient city of Thora, famous for a Mars oracle, while in the territory of Corvaro there was a fortified oppidum belonging to the ancient city of Lista, conquered by the Sabines.

Borgorose offers many tourist attractions, particularly for nature and mountain lovers. It is possible to visit the Montagne della Duchessa Regional Reserve, where you can hike and admire breathtaking landscapes. Furthermore, the town is located in a strategic point to visit the natural parks of Lazio and Abruzzo, such as the Sirente-Velino Regional Natural Park and the Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise National Park.

Among the cultural attractions, you can visit the churches of San Giovanni Battista and Santa Maria delle Grazie, dating back to 1700 and 1900 respectively. Additionally, the territory of Borgorose is rich in archaeological sites, such as those of the ancient Lista and Sant'Anatolia.

Events and gastronomy

Borgorose also offers many events, such as the feast of San Giovanni Battista, the patron saint of the town, celebrated on June 24 with a procession and fireworks. Moreover, Borgorose is part of the Wine and Chestnut Road, which offers a wide range of typical food and wine products of the area, such as the Cicolano wine and the Borgorose chestnut.
