Borgoratto Alessandrino

Discovering Borgoratto Alessandrino

Hello everyone, today I'll be talking about Borgoratto Alessandrino, a small municipality located in the province of Alessandria in Piedmont, Italy. With a population of only 561 inhabitants, this town has a long and interesting history that is worth knowing. In this article I will tell you everything I have discovered about the history, symbols, society, infrastructure, and administration of Borgoratto.

History

Borgoratto Alessandrino has very ancient origins, dating back at least to the 13th century. According to tradition, its name would derive from a group of families called Ratti or De' Ratti, but there is also the hypothesis that the town was an ancient Lombard village called Baldiratium. However, sources on this theory are scarce and unreliable.

In the 15th century, the town became a fiefdom of the Lord of these lands, Filippo Maria Visconti, who donated it to his trusted secretary, Simonino Ghilini, along with the fiefdom of Gamalero. This gift guaranteed Ghilini full control over the castles, properties and taxes of the two fiefs, which became independent from the jurisdiction of the city of Alessandria, where Simonino lived.

Borgoratto and Gamalero joined the estates that Simonino Ghilini already owned: a mill and the adjacent lands near Vaprio d'Adda, to which were added those of Castelceriolo. In 1450, the two fiefs were confiscated and then returned to Simonino Ghilini.

In 1713, Borgoratto passed under the rule of the House of Savoy, after the Treaty of Utrecht. From that moment, the town followed the history of the Savoy domains.

The coat of arms and the flag of Borgoratto Alessandrino were granted with the decree of the President of the Republic of 7 April 1994. The coat of arms features a crowned lion, which derives from the coat of arms of the Ghilini family, who were feudal lords of Borgoratto and Gamalero during the Visconti domination. The blue transverse band represents the course of the Bormida River.
