Welcome to Conio, the highest village in the Maro Valley!

Conio is a charming hamlet in the municipality of Borgomaro, located in the province of Imperia. With its 107 inhabitants, this small town is characterized by the presence of Monte Grande, which at 622 meters makes it the highest village in the valley.

Physical geography

Conio is located in the upper Maro Valley and thanks to its numerous springs, it is a perfect habitat for the cultivation of the famous "white bean of Conio".

History

Conio was a fiefdom of the Lascaris di Ventimiglia in the Middle Ages, who left as a testimony the castle in the center of the village. In 1928, the town was suppressed and incorporated into the territory of the municipality of Borgomaro as a hamlet.

Monuments and places of interest

Conio offers a variety of monuments and points of interest. Among the tourist attractions, we can mention the parish church of the Nativity of Mary, located in the center of the village in front of a small square, and the church of San Maurizio, which is the first parish church of Conio and is located in an isolated position away from the village.

Furthermore, not to be missed are the oratory of the Holy Trinity, located in a square at the entrance of the village, preceded by a portico, and the chapel of San Rocco, which is located at the beginning of the ancient mule track that leads to Ville San Pietro.

Culture

Among the events not to be missed in Conio are the Feast of San Maurizio, which takes place on September 22nd, and the Patronal Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on September 8th.

Economy

The economy of Conio is mainly based on agriculture, particularly on the cultivation of white beans, which has recently become a Slow Food presidium.

Infrastructure and transportation

Conio is reachable from the provincial road 25, which begins in Ville San Pietro and connects to the provincial 24 coming from Borgomaro. The new halfway road connects Conio with Poggialto in the municipality of Aurigo. Riviera Trasporti ensures some daily runs that connect the village with Imperia.
