The province of Imperia: a friendly overview
Hello friends! Today I want to talk to you about the province of Imperia, a beautiful area in Liguria that has about 208,303 inhabitants. It borders to the north with the province of Cuneo, to the east with Savona, while to the west there is France (Alpes-Maritimes) and to the south the Ligurian Sea.
Let's explore the physical geography
The province of Imperia extends in the western and southernmost part of Liguria. Historically, it is divided into three districts: Imperiese, Sanremese and Ventimigliese. Among the most important cities are Imperia (41,999 inhabitants), Sanremo (54,042 inhabitants), Ventimiglia (24,000 inhabitants) and Taggia (13,900 inhabitants).
A brief history of the province
The territory that we now know as the province of Imperia was part of the province of Nice until 1859. With the Treaty of Turin in 1860, a large part of the province was ceded to France. However, the remaining part remained in the Kingdom of Sardinia and formed the province of Porto Maurizio, composed of the districts of Porto Maurizio and Sanremo.
In 1923, Porto Maurizio joined the city of Imperia and the province took its current name. During World War II, France invaded part of the province's territory but had to withdraw under President Truman.
Coats of arms and honorary titles
The official coat of arms of the province of Imperia was approved in 1927. In the meantime, Imperia was awarded the Gold Medal for Military Valor for the role played by its populations in the partisan struggle during World War II.
Society
According to Istat data from 2014, there were 23,104 foreign citizens in the province of Imperia, accounting for 10.66% of the population. The municipality with the highest number of foreigners is Sanremo, while Montegrosso Pian Latte is the only municipality where no foreign presence is registered. The predominant religion is Catholicism and is divided between the dioceses of Albenga-Imperia and Ventimiglia-Sanremo.
Culture
The province of Imperia is rich in cities of art such as Ventimiglia, Imperia and Sanremo. Ventimiglia is famous for the Balzi Rossi, the Roman archaeological area, and the medieval city. Imperia is known for the Basilica of San Maurizio, the largest church in Liguria, while Sanremo boasts the famous Liberty-style Casino of Sanremo and the Russian Church.
I hope this overview of the province of Imperia has made you want to visit it. I assure you that you won't regret it!
