Borgo Virgilio

Hi everyone, let me introduce you to Borgo Virgilio!

Located in the province of Mantua in Lombardy, Borgo Virgilio is a relatively young municipality: it was established on February 4, 2014 following the merger of the Italian municipalities of Borgoforte and Virgilio, after the inhabitants of the two entities approved the merger proposed by the two municipal councils through a consultative popular referendum on December 1, 2013.

The coat of arms and the banner of the municipality of Borgo Virgilio were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on November 25, 2019. The banner, a blue drapery, is the emblem of the municipality.

Monuments and Places of Interest

Borgo Virgilio is a municipality rich in history and art. Among the religious architectures, we find the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin, which was built in Cerese between 1825 and 1913 according to the design of Angelo Campi, the Church of San Celestino Pope, which was built in the village of Pietole in 1833 according to the design of Giovanni Battista Vergani, and the Church of San Giovanni Battista (Borgo Virgilio), which is the parish church in the village of Borgoforte.

Among the civil architectures, the Corte Virgiliana is a rural villa built in the territory of the village of Pietole between the 15th century and 1875. It was purchased by the Gonzaga family who entrusted renovation works to the court architect Antonio Maria Viani. The Monument to Virgil is located in Pietole, the ancient Andes, the birthplace of the great Latin poet. The work of the Mantuan sculptor Agamennone Paganini was inaugurated by a speech by Giosuè Carducci in 1884.

Finally, among the military architectures, the Fort of Pietole was built in 1808 and was the French general François de Chasseloup-Laubat, sent by Napoleon, who built it simultaneously with those of Belfiore and San Giorgio to defend the nearby city of Mantua. The Central Fort (Borgoforte) was built by the Austrians in 1859-61 north of the Po River and was part of the "Borgoforte Bridgehead", defending the Mantua-Verona direction.

Infrastructure and Transport

The municipality is crossed by the former state road 62 of the Cisa and the former state road 413 Romana. In addition, the villages of Cerese and Cappelletta (Borgo Virgilio) are served by the urban line no. 8 of the local public transport of the city of Mantua, thanks to the APAM company. Borgo Virgilio is also connected to the Verona-Modena railway line through the Romanore station.
