Borgo Valsugana: History, Landscape and Delights of Trentino

History

Valsugana has always had historical, political and economic importance due to its location as a passage between Veneto and Trentino.

From the origins to the Roman age

The first stable inhabitants of the area date back to the late Bronze Age and were Rhaetic and Venetic populations. In the 1st century AD, the territory was romanized and annexed to the Municipium of Feltria of the X Regio. This is the time when the valley took the name "Vallis Ausuganea", which derived from the ancient name of Borgo, Ausugum. Later, the name changed to "Burgum Ausugi", with the addition of "Burgum", from the Germanic "burgs" (fortified raised place).

The term "ausugum" is certainly Roman, but it could have been born from the non-Roman population, i.e. the Rhaeto-Venetic, of pre-Alpine Rhaetic language. Even the town of Susegana and the inhabitants of the Venetian plain, the "Eugaei", have almost the same "root".

The construction of the Claudia Augusta Road

The construction of the Claudia Augusta Road, a great road that connected Altino to Augusta, favored the creation of new settlements in the valley. This gave a strong economic boost to trade and made Borgo Valsugana a mandatory stop for travelers.

Commercial activities and natural resources

Borgo Valsugana has always had a strong commercial activity thanks to its strategic position on several communication routes. In the 12th century, the town became a mandatory stop for transport in Austrian territory.

In addition to agriculture, there are other important economic activities such as woodworking, ironworking, stoneworking, and even the famous Potato Cake arrives from the hemisphere, a dish that has received the recognition of the Tre Trentino Quality brand.

Tourist attractions

Borgo Valsugana offers numerous tourist attractions worth visiting. For example, you can admire the Civic Tower, a portrait of the historic center of the city, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, Piazza della Segheria, and Piazza Fiera with its characteristic fountain.

The enogastronomy of Borgo Valsugana is also famous, thanks to the numerous enogastronomic shops scattered throughout the historic center where you can buy typical products of the territory.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Borgo Valsugana is a wonderful city, rich in history and traditions. Its position in the territory makes Borgo a mandatory stop for travelers, for history and art enthusiasts. It is also a perfect place for lovers of good things, given the quality of the products of the territory. Every year, thousands of tourists come to visit this city on the Brenta River and to live a unique experience on the riverbank, immersed in the history and beauty of Valsugana.
