Tossignano
Borgo Tossignano: a town with a rich history
Borgo Tossignano is an Italian town with a population of 3215 inhabitants in the metropolitan city of Bologna, located in the historical region of Romagna. The area has a rich and intense history, leaving behind visible traces that still exist today.
History
Middle Ages and Modern Era
The town has a long and rich history filled with significant events that shaped the area we know today. In the Middle Ages, the area was under the control of the Alidosi family, the lords of Imola, who also had authority over nearby smaller towns. In the Modern Era, the area came under the control of the Estensi family, who implemented various development and modernization projects.
20th Century
During World War II, the area suffered several tragic events. In September 1944, Tossignano was occupied for twelve days by partisan forces who ousted the Germans. When the Allies' advance was halted, the population had to flee, and Borgo was declared a no-man's land. In 1945, an Italian partisan formation that was part of the new army entered Borgo and maintained control until the offensive of April 1945, when the town was liberated by the British 8th Army.
In 1957, the municipal seat was transferred from Tossignano to Borgo, which became a hamlet.
Symbols
Borgo Tossignano's coat of arms comes from Tossignano's coat of arms and consists of an eagle appearing on a 1503 parchment preserved in the Imola library. The coat of arms was recognized by decree of the head of government on October 22, 1936. The gonfalon, instead, is a blue flag.
