Grezzano

Grezzano, a hamlet of the municipality of Borgo San Lorenzo

Hello everyone! Today I am talking about Grezzano, a splendid hamlet of the municipality of Borgo San Lorenzo, located in the metropolitan city of Florence, in Tuscany. With its ancient and interesting history, its monuments, places of interest, and cultural events, Grezzano will conquer you from the very first moment!

History

Grezzano has a very ancient history: its first mention dates back to 1037 when it appears in documents as the ''Curtem et Castrum de Grezzano'', which belonged to the Guidi Counts. Over the centuries, Grezzano has distinguished itself for its resistance: during the siege of Florence in 1529, it successfully opposed enemy troops, demonstrating great courage and determination.

During World War II, Grezzano served as the starting base for the 338th and 339th Regiments of the 85th American Division, which launched a frontal attack on the Gothic Line. Today, in the territory of Grezzano, you can find the ''Villa Henri Dapples'', the ''Villa "Il Monte"'', the ''Villa Verde'' and the ''Museum of Peasant Civilization of Casa d'Erci'' . Furthermore, the hamlet is famous for the festivals of the "tortelli di patate mugellano", which take place during the spring-summer period.

In particular, the Church of Santo Stefano is a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture, located on the southern flank of the Razzuolo Apennines. The interior of the church features a wooden ''Via Crucis'' and a polychrome maiolica tabernacle executed by Giovanni della Robbia. The exterior of the church is in stone and here was located the ''Pala dello Spedalingo'' by Rosso Fiorentino, now at the Uffizi.

If you want to deepen your knowledge of the history of Grezzano and its art, I recommend reading Gaspero Righini's book ''Mugello e Val di Sieve. Note e memorie storico-artistico-letterarie'', published in 1956, and Marcello Scalzo's, with texts by Adriano Gasparrini, ''Rilevare e rappresentare: Borgo San Lorenzo'', published in 2004.
