Borgo a Mozzano

During the Middle Ages, Borgo a Mozzano was subjected to many invasions by enemy armies seeking to conquer its territory. In 1339, the Maddalena, the most famous bridge in the village, was built. During this period, the Castle of Borgo a Mozzano was destroyed and abandoned due to the instability of the ground on which it stood. Later, the village fell under the domination of the cities of Pisa and Lucca.

During the Renaissance, Borgo a Mozzano experienced notable development due to the commerce that developed along the communication routes that connected it to Lucca and the rest of Tuscany. The construction of the church of San Jacopo was one of the most important works in the area, where funds were collected from the wealthier families of the village.

With the end of Florentine rule, Borgo a Mozzano lost its strategic importance but continued to be an important commercial center thanks to the production of linen and woolen fabrics. During the Second World War, the village suffered many damages due to air raids.

Today, the economy of the municipality is mainly based on agriculture, particularly the production of fruits and vegetables, but also on the cultivation of olives and the production of wine. Borgo a Mozzano is also an important commercial center thanks to the shops located along the three main streets of the village.

In recent years, Borgo a Mozzano has also developed a strong presence in the tourism industry thanks to its proximity to important cities such as Lucca and Florence, and to the beauty of the natural places that surround it, such as the Garfagnana and the Apuan Alps. It is famous for its Maddalena bridge, which attracts numerous tourists from all over the world every year. Furthermore, in the summer period, the municipality organizes a series of festivals and village fairs that attract a large number of visitors.

The municipality of Borgo a Mozzano is very active in promoting its cultural and folkloric heritage. Every year, numerous festivals, village fairs and events such as the "Festa di San Jacopo", dedicated to the patron saint of the municipality, the "Sagra della Polenta" and the "Sagra della Ciliegia" are held.
