Borgio Verèzzi: the town of theatre

Borgio Verèzzi, a municipality in the province of Savona, Liguria, is nicknamed "the town of theatre" thanks to the annual theatre festival held there. The town has a population of around 2046 inhabitants and its town hall is located in the Borgio district. Borgio Verèzzi is situated along the Ligurian coast, between Finale Ligure to the east and Pietra Ligure to the west.

The history of Borgio Verèzzi

In 181 BC, the Roman Empire defeated the local tribes in the area near Mount Grosso, subduing the territory. Subsequently, the village of Borgio was on the Via Julia Augusta, which today corresponds to Via Pian dei Rossi, with the Pollupice stopover station. During the Middle Ages, Borgio and Verezzi became part of the possessions of the Abbey of San Pietro in Varatella in Toirano, and were later annexed to the feudal branch of Del Carretto in Finale Ligure, becoming a border locality between the Arduinica and Aleramica marches. In 1385, Pope Urban VI ceded these villages, including Borgio and Verezzi, to the Republic of Genoa, which included them in the podesteria of Pietra. The villages were to guarantee the security and defense of the jurisdiction, but Borgio was lacking a defensive position, which was only filled in 1564 with the construction of a tower and then a fortress (1588), destroyed before 1789 to make way for the church of San Pietro. In the 17th century, the troops of the Duchy of Savoy attacked the Ligurian podesterie, but those at Borgio were repelled on May 30, 1625.
