Borgio Verezzi
Welcome to Borgio Verezzi, the town of theater
Borgio Verezzi, also known as Bórži Veréžžu or Bórzi Veréssu in the Ligurian language, is an Italian municipality located in Liguria, in the province of Savona, with a population of approximately 2,046 inhabitants. The hamlet of Borgio is also the seat of the municipality. This small coastal town lies between Finale Ligure to the east and Pietra Ligure to the west and is nicknamed the town of theater due to the annual theater festival held there. In this article, we will explore its history and physical geography.
Physical geography
Borgio Verezzi is a municipality located on the Ligurian coast. The town lies between Finale Ligure to the east and Pietra Ligure to the west. Its proximity to the sea makes Borgio Verezzi a popular tourist destination. The town is situated near Mount Grosso where a great battle took place in 181 BC between the Roman Empire and the local tribes.
History
Borgio Verezzi has a long history dating back to ancient Roman times. It was near Mount Grosso that the Roman Empire defeated the local tribes, which was crucial for the subjugation of the territory. The city was incorporated into the jurisdiction of Pietra Ligure by the bishop of Albenga around 1216. Under Genoese rule, this part of the territory was included in the podesteria of Pietra and every community had the task of ensuring the security and defense of the jurisdiction.
The position of Borgio, on the border between the Arduinica and Aleramica marches, led the city to be annexed, around 1212, to the feudal branch of the Del Carretto of Finale Ligure. However, in 1385, Pope Urban VI decided to cede the villages of Pietra, Toirano, Giustenice, Borgio, Verezzi and other lands to the Republic of Genoa. From this point of view, the location of Borgio was lacking as it was without a defensive position. This deficiency, essential for the survival of the villages in a period plagued by increasingly frequent pirate attacks, was filled in 1564 when, on the design of Antonio Rodaro, sent to Borgio by the Senate of the Republic, a tower was built which is still present on the Borgian territory, and then a fortress that was destroyed before 1789 to build the current church of San Pietro.
In the course of the 17th century, there was an attack by the Duchy of Savoy in various Ligurian podesterie and precisely in the territory of the jurisdiction of Pietra, on May 30, 1625, the Savoy troops were repulsed from their path towards Genoa.
Conclusions
Borgio Verezzi is a small municipality with a long history. The city was founded in Roman times and has seen the passage of several powers over the centuries. Its location on the Ligurian coast makes it a popular tourist destination. And, above all, Borgio Verezzi is famous for its annual theater festival. Thanks to its rich history and natural beauty, Borgio Verezzi is a city not to be missed if you have the opportunity to visit Liguria.
