Borghetto di Vara: History, Territory, and Natural Attractions.

History

Its foundation dates back to the 13th century when inhabitants of the nearby Brugnato emigrated to this area, constituting a first commercial nucleus along the postal regia road that led from La Spezia to Genoa. Borghetto also served as a stage of the medieval Via dei Monti, traveled by pilgrims and merchants and was long contested between the dioceses of Luni and that of La Spezia-Sarzana-Brugnato. It was the men of Brugnato who negotiated a collaboration with Genoa, requesting protection against the Malaspina. Since 1272, the collaboration has led to obtaining a portion of territory near Ripalta (Borghetto di Vara) and founding the first fortified center of Borghetto. Borghetto gained importance as a strategic center. With the new Napoleonic domination, Borghetto returned from December 2, 1797, to the Department of Vara, within the Republic of Liguria. During the French period, Borghetto absorbed the nearby autonomous municipalities of Ripalta, L'Ago, and Pogliasca, while Cassana (Borghetto di Vara) was transferred from the municipality of Pignone (Italy). On July 11, 1809, the passage of Pope Pius VII, prisoner of the Napoleonic troops, is reported in the historical archives.
