In 1522, the Republic of Genoa definitively acquired the fief and subjected it to the jurisdiction of the captaincy of Pieve di Teco, following its Genoese fate until the Napoleonic domination of the late eighteenth century.
With the French domination, Borghetto became part of the Ligurian Republic in 1797. From 1805 to 1814 it was included in the Department of Montenotte under the First French Empire. In 1815, the territory was incorporated into the Kingdom of Sardinia and subsequently into the Kingdom of Italy from 1861. During World War II, the municipality was a protagonist of the Italian Resistance.
