Discover the Municipality of Bonefro

Hello friends, today I will tell you about the Municipality of Bonefro, located in the province of Campobasso, in Molise. The small village has about 1193 inhabitants and is located at an altitude of 640 m above sea level. The territory ranges from 383 m of the Tona stream to 889 m of the Cerro del Ruccolo. From its panoramic position, it is possible to admire the splendid Adriatic Sea and the Tremiti Islands that emerge on the horizon.

The history of Bonefro

The first inhabitants of Bonefro date back to the Lombard era, that is, at the end of the 9th century and the beginning of the 10th century. However, evidence has been found dating back to before this period. The birth of the village is linked to a legend according to which pilgrims, heading towards Puglia and leaving from Venafro, were attacked by bandits. The men became stones, while the women were transformed into doves. The attack took place near the "chajedonne", or "women's cry". The name "Binifri", from the Latin "Vinifer", first appears in a written document dating back to 1049.

Monuments and places of interest in Bonefro

In the historic center of Bonefro, it is possible to admire numerous historic buildings that testify to its ancient history. One of the most important is the Lombard Castle, built around the middle of the 10th century. The Church of Santa Maria delle Rose is another monument of great importance, built in the Romanesque period, between the 12th and 13th centuries, and subsequently restored by Mons. Tria in 1731. The historic center, called "Terra Vecchia", preserves four gates, which date back to the feudal period: Porta Molino, Porta Piè la Terra, Porta Fontana, and Porta Nuova, and three vico Gaifo dating back to the Lombard period. In the village, there are the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, dating back to 1716, the chapel of San Nicola, the Fountain of the Blind, built in eighteenth-century style in 1816, and the Fontana della Terra, built in 1771.

Society

The population of the Municipality of Bonefro has remained stable in recent years. The economy is mainly agricultural, but there is also a small craft and commercial area, called by the local population "Bonefro industrial area". The hamlet of San Vito is the only one present in the Municipality, with a population of 65 inhabitants.

Infrastructure and transport

Local extra-urban transportation is carried out by bus and trains, thanks to the Bonefro-Santa Croce station, located in the hamlet of S. Vito. The area is well connected to the capital and other centers of southern Molise.

The Municipality of Bonefro is governed by a mayor and a municipal council, elected every five years. Below is a table with the administrations that have followed one another in recent years.
