Bolzano Novarese

Bolzano Novarese: a medieval charm in a Piedmontese municipality

Bolzano Novarese is a small municipality with 1,146 inhabitants in the province of Novara, located in the heart of the Piedmont region. The name of the municipality comes from the Cusian dialect of the Lombard language and reflects the millenary history of the territory, which has been inhabited since medieval times.

History

The municipality of Bolzano Novarese has ancient origins and its past dates back to the Roman age, when the area was part of the Riviera di San Giulio, an episcopal principality that included several municipalities in the Novara area. Little is known about the first inhabited center of Bolzano Novarese, which probably rose in the Middle Ages, but it was later moved downstream, where the present-day municipality stands.

Among the historical curiosities of the municipality is the presence of a tower dating back to the 15th-16th century, which still retains its original appearance, as well as the San Martino church, an example of rural Romanesque dating back to the 12th century.
