Boltiere

Discovering Boltiere: a brief introduction

Hello friends, today I will talk to you about Boltiere, a beautiful municipality located in the province of Bergamo, in Lombardy. With a population of around 6,000 inhabitants, Boltiere is located in the middle of the Bergamo plain and is about 15 kilometers southwest of Bergamo.

The history of Boltiere

The first inhabitants who settled in the territory of Boltiere were some tribes of the populations of the Ligurians and the Gauls Cenomani. Subsequently, the town grew thanks to its favorable position, right on the road that connected Bergamo to Milan. Boltiere was later conquered by the Holy Roman Empire and entrusted to the Bishop of Bergamo.

The name Boltiere is believed to derive from the territorial conformation of the area, rich in swamps and marshes, while other hypotheses suggest that the name is connected to a proper name.

Over time, Boltiere was involved in the bloody faction fights between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines. In particular, the town repeatedly clashed with the territory of Trezzo sull'Adda. After the destruction of the castle in the 15th century, Boltiere was built with defensive fortifications.

In 1428, the territory of Boltiere was placed under the Republic of Venice, which ended the faction fights of the medieval era, beginning to implement a far-sighted policy in the social and economic fields. The Republic of Venice brought undeniable economic benefits to the town, including the birth and development of activities related to the existence of customs itself, such as smuggling and brigandage.

To the Republic of Venice followed the Cisalpine Republic, which merged Boltiere with the neighboring municipality of Osio Sotto.
