The province of Macerata: a geographic overview

Hello everyone! Today we're talking about the beautiful province of Macerata, located in the Marche region in central Italy. The province covers an area of approximately 2770 km² and has been the largest in the Marche region since 2009.

The province of Macerata is bordered by the Adriatic Sea to the east and the Umbria region to the west. And do you know what's special about Macerata? It's the only province in the Marche region that shares borders with three other provinces in the same region: Ancona, Ascoli Piceno, and Fermo! Additionally, the territory extends beyond the Umbro-Marchigiano Apennine watershed to the territories of Visso in Valnerina, becoming the main "crossing over" point in the Marche region.

Territory and economy

The province of Macerata is predominantly hilly (67,7%) and mountainous (32,3%). The Apennines and the Subapennines are home to three mountain communities unions: Potenza Esino Musone Mountain Community, Marca di Camerino Mountain Community, and Monti Azzurri Mountain Community.

Let's also talk about the economy of Macerata. As in the rest of the region, there are many small but highly specialized companies here. Some relevant industries include the footwear sector and the establishment of the Bank of the Province of Macerata in 2006.

Infrastructure and transport

The province of Macerata was crossed by the famous roads that led to Rome. The most important road was the Via Lauretana (Umbria-Marche), which entered the Marche region from Foligno through the Colfiorito Plateau and the Chienti River, heading towards the Santa Casa sanctuary and then to the port of Ancona.

With the advent of trains, the province of Macerata saw the construction of the Rome-Ancona Railway through the Fossato di Vico-Fabriano-Vall'Esina Pass. This allowed for the connection of the capital with Civitanova Marche through important cities such as Macerata, Tolentino, San Severino Marche, Corridonia, and Montecosaro.

But not only that: Camerino was connected to this railway at Castelraimondo with the Castelraimondo-Camerino Railway, which is now discontinued and dismantled, replaced by bus service.

Here's an overview of the wonderful province of Macerata. If you're in the area, you absolutely must visit it!
