Sessarego
Sessàrego: an ancient and welcoming village
Sessàrego, also known as Sessægu in the Ligurian language, is a small geographical fraction of 235 inhabitants of the municipality of Bogliasco, located just 3 km away, at an altitude of 245 m above sea level. This small country village is renowned for its ancient history and the hospitality of its community.
History: from origins to present
According to some sources, Sessàrego has existed since the 12th century and is one of the oldest villages in Bogliasco. During the pirate invasions in the 16th and 17th centuries, the inhabitants of Bogliasco found refuge in Sessàrego to escape the pirate dangers. The village then followed the fate of Bogliasco and, from 1928 to 1946, together with the fractions of Poggio Favaro-San Bernardo and Corsanico, was part of the municipality of Bogliasco Pieve before returning to being a fraction of Bogliasco.
Monuments and places of interest
Sessàrego boasts a very important church, the Church of the Ascension of Jesus and Our Lady of the Snow. This church is documented since 1234, although the current structure dates back to the first half of the 17th century with some renovations in the 19th century. Inside the church are some paintings by Genoese school of the 17th century of remarkable workmanship. The Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Snow was founded in 1897.
Culture
In Sessàrego there are two patronal feasts: the first on August 5th for the religious solemnity of Our Lady of the Snow, the second, forty days after Easter, for the Ascension. The village is also home to the Association "Sessarego nel Mondo", which deals with historical research and brings together all the descendants of emigrants with the same surname who, in past centuries, emigrated mainly to the Americas.
