Bogliasco

The charming Bogliasco of Liguria

Bogliasco is one of the most charming locations in Liguria, situated in a small inlet at the mouth of the eponymous river. Let's discover together the characteristics that make this place so fascinating.

Physical geography

The beauty of Bogliasco is due to the variety of its natural landscapes. Among the features of the terrain, there are Mount Cordona (803 m) along the ancient trail to the hamlet of Sessarego and Mount Rotondo (789 m). Beaches alternate with deep and characteristic cliffs, creating a unique natural panorama, ideal for activities such as surfing. The hinterland is typical of the eastern Liguria, partly cultivated with Olea europaea and with possibilities for excursions.

Climate

Bogliasco is a location that offers its visitors mild weather throughout the year. Sheltered by the mountains to the north, it has a very mild climate in winter, with temperatures higher than those recorded in nearby Genoa by several degrees. In summer, the climate is rather hot and humid, with a perception of temperature sometimes higher than the actual one.

Origins of the name

The toponym Bogliasco derives from the Latin word bogli "bulliens," which means "boiling." In ancient times, the river was called Rio dei Bogli because the water, through small waterfalls along the way, creates a foaming effect in the pools present. According to another hypothesis, the term would derive from the Ligurian language "bœggi" (in Italian buchi), given the presence of pools in the Bogliasco river; the suffix -asco would be a typically Ligurian suffix.

History

The history of Bogliasco has ancient roots.

Prehistoric and Roman times

In the 1980s, the Archaeology Superintendence of Liguria began an archaeological dig in the Nasoni area, which led to the discovery of chipped stones adapted as tools, dating back to the Paleolithic, and others attributable to the Mesolithic. Always in the same locality, artifacts were found dating back to the Western Roman Empire, confirming the hypothesis that even then the path that from the Val Fontanabuona led to the Riviera di Levante was used as a transit location by the Roman troops.

The barbarian and Saracen invasions

After the Byzantine domination starting from 538, it passed under the control of the Lombards from 641, an occupation led by King Rotari and which almost entirely subjugated the Ligurian territory.

Conclusion

Bogliasco is a location that has become appreciated both for the beauty of its natural landscapes and for its millennia-long history. Thanks to its favorable position with respect to the climate and the variety of opportunities offered, Bogliasco is the ideal destination for those seeking a pleasant vacation surrounded by nature and culture.
