Discovering Bodio Lomnago: a small town with a long history

Bodio Lomnago is a small municipality of about 2,192 inhabitants located in the province of Varese, Lombardy. Despite its size, the town boasts an ancient history and a cultural and archaeological heritage of considerable interest.

Prehistory and the pile-dwelling village

The territory of Bodio Lomnago has been inhabited since the Stone Age. In fact, three pile-dwelling settlements have been discovered in the area since 1863: Bodio Centrale, Desor, and Keller. Thanks to the findings and analyses carried out, it has been demonstrated that these sites were inhabited from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age. Remains of ceramics, flint and bronze tools have been found, as well as pile-dwelling foundations and even 128 Roman coins at the Bodio Centrale settlement. Due to its importance, this settlement has been included in UNESCO's World Heritage List along with two other pile-dwelling settlements in the province of Varese.

Antiquity and the Celtic Insubres

The Celtic Insubres, later Romanized, used the hilly characteristics of the territory of Bodio Lomnago to build an observation and communication tower on top of the hill now known as Monte Rogorella. One of the most important findings in this area are the "coppelle", stones shaped like altars with a hollow in the center, probably used by the Celts for their religious ceremonies.

The Middle Ages and the rule of the Longobards

Later on, Bodio Lomnago came under the rule of the Longobards. From this period, the small church of San Sigismondo, now known as San Crocifisso, still located in the historic center of the town, remains. During the Middle Ages, the town was part of various fiefs belonging to local nobility families such as Bossi, Daverio, and Sessa.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Bodio Lomnago is a town with an ancient history that can boast a cultural and archaeological heritage of great value. Despite its modest size, the town holds various surprises for visitors who want to immerse themselves in the history and culture of this area of the Lombardy region.
