The Sanctuary of the Most Holy Crucifix of Boca
The Sanctuary of the Most Holy Crucifix of Boca is a beautiful minor basilica located in the municipality of Boca, near the Strona river, one of the tributaries of the Agogna. The place of worship is a destination for numerous pilgrimages, especially during religious festivities.
History of the Sanctuary of the Most Holy Crucifix
The Sanctuary of the Most Holy Crucifix has a very special history. Legend has it that the construction dates back to the 17th century following the violent death of two local spouses. A crucifix image was painted on that wall, which still today represents the central figure of the basilica.
Over the years, the sanctuary was expanded thanks to numerous miraculous healings, which were confirmed and recognized by the Catholic Church, inspiring further interventions. In 1819, the building was expanded again and underwent a radical transformation under the guidance of architect Alessandro Antonelli, who overturned the original project and created what we know today as one of the most important minor basilicas in Piedmont.
Restorations and adverse events
The construction of the Sanctuary of the Most Holy Crucifix was not an easy journey. Delays were of a technical, economic, and even misunderstandings with the local population. In 1907, a tragic event shook the construction: a violent storm caused the collapse of the left wall of the sanctuary, which was leaning against the side of a hill. The site remained idle for a long time, awaiting restoration.
After these episodes, the sanctuary suffered further damage during World War II, but the basilica managed to withstand the bombs. Only in the early 1970s did the restoration work become chronic, beginning a long period of work and constant attention to the conservation of the structure.
