Origins of the name: an ancient story
The name "Blevio" derives from the ancient Celtic Ligurian language "Biuelius," which refers to the term "uiuo," meaning "alive." This has been passed down over time to arrive at the modern Italian language.
History: from an ancient culture to the present day
Blevio has an ancient and fascinating history. In fact, since the times of the Golasecca culture XI - IV century BC, there was already a castellum here. Subsequently, in 1084, the bishop of Como, Reginaldo, drew up a will in favor of the Como Cathedral, so that a mass was celebrated in his memory every year on the anniversary of his death. In 1279, the canons of the Cathedral Chapter of Como drew up the inventory of their properties, also contemplating the presence of the commune of Blevio, which was later acquired by the municipality of Como. In 1335, the area was mentioned in the Statutes of Como as the "comune de Blevio," which had the task of maintaining the Regina road. Over the centuries, Blevio has also faced difficult moments, such as the plague epidemics in 1361 and 1549. In 1433, the inhabitants of Blevio and Torno were granted the right to freely extract salt, relieving them of the salt tax. In 1644, Blevio became part of the parish of Nesso, in the Marchesato of Nesso, which was granted to the family of Senator Francesco Maria Casnedi until the beginning of the 18th century. In 1751, the "Sant'Agostino" village of Como was included in the territory of Blevio, which was separated from the Pieve of Nesso and inserted into the new Pieve of Zezio five years later. In 1790, the municipality was entrusted as a fief to Count Antonio Tanzi, exponent of the main branch of the noble Tanzi family of Blevio.
