Blello

Blello: the least populated municipality in the province of Bergamo

Have you ever heard of Blello? It is a municipality in the province of Bergamo, located in Val Brembilla, one of the side valleys of Val Brembana. With only 70 inhabitants, it is the least populated municipality in the province of Bergamo!

History of Blello: from its origins to emigration

According to recent studies, the first stable settlements in Blello date back to the Roman Empire. The name of the municipality is derived from the proper name Bellelo. The territory was dotted with numerous small urban settlements, including the places Brevieno, Ghisalerio, and Blello, ideologically united by the Church of the Annunciation of Mary.

Blello has always maintained the characteristics of a small mountain village, with main activities related to pastoralism, livestock breeding, timber harvesting, and charcoal production.

Although the village was marginally affected by factional struggles between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines in the Middle Ages, there were no episodes of chronicle. Blello was a place of refuge for people fleeing persecution during factional wars. Its inhabitants always tried to stay out of power disputes, which guaranteed them tranquility.

In the 20th century, the village began to suffer from the emigration of its inhabitants, attracted by greater professional and economic opportunities outside the municipal territory. Today, Blello has become the least populated municipality in the province of Bergamo.

Blello today: a resilient community

Despite its low population, Blello is a resilient community, and today, thanks to the diversification of economic activities and an improved road system that allows communication with nearby valleys, those who do not want to lose their origins can access the facilities of the nearest centers.

Agriculture and animal husbandry are still important activities in this hilly territory, activities that require a strong knowledge of the territory and its resources. Nature, moreover, is the main heritage of Blello: the territory offers numerous paths and green areas, perfect for trekking and outdoor activities.

The Church of the Annunciation of Mary remains the central element of the village and frames religious celebrations and local festivals.

Nevertheless, emigration has left an indelible mark on the community. Today, Blello appears as a charming and peaceful place, whose past is linked to traditional activities and the resilience of a community determined not to lose its roots.
