Bizzarone

Bizzarone: a brief historical tour

Welcome to Bizzarone, a municipality of 1704 inhabitants in the province of Como, Lombardy. Bizzarone is famous for being adjacent to Switzerland and for its tourist customs. From a historical point of view, the municipal territory was part of the parish of Uggiate until the second half of the 18th century.

The history of Bizzarone

The Statutes of Como of 1335 mention the "comune de Bisarono" among the municipalities that were part of the parish of Uggiate. In the fourteenth century, the lands of Bizzarone were part of the Visconti fief, and later passed into the hands of Rezzonico, Luini and Somigliana. In the sixteenth century, with the transfer of the Pieve di Balerna to the Swiss, Bizzarone became a border territory of the Duchy of Milan.

Under the rule of the Archduchy of Austria, in 1791 the municipality of Bizzarone was confirmed within the Pieve of Uggiate and became part of the newly created Province of Como. Following the merger of smaller municipalities, Bizzarone was incorporated into the municipality of Uggiate-Trevano, but this merger was abolished by the Austrians at the time of the activation of the municipalities of the province of Como within the Lombard-Venetian Kingdom.

The coats of arms of Bizzarone

Bizzarone has a coat of arms and a gonfalon, granted by a decree of the President of the Republic on September 21, 2011. Bizzarone's gonfalon is a white banner.

The symbol of the wind rose is present in the coat of arms of the municipality of Bizzarone. The medieval name of the village, "Bisarono", in Celtic language means "place where the bisa blows", that is the tramontana wind. The horse that appears in the coat of arms recalls the position of Bizzarone along the Strada Cavallina, a connecting road between the State of Milan and the District of Mendrisio, frequented in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries by merchants, horsemen and smugglers.
