Mariotto

Mariotto: a small village at the foot of the Murge

Mariotto is a small hamlet located within the municipality of Bitonto, 14 km away from the town center. Its name comes from Mariotto Verità, a feudal lord who ruled the area in the 15th century. Today, Mariotto is mainly known for the quality of its extra virgin olive oil and wine. Agriculture is the main industry, with olive groves, vineyards, and almond trees being the prime crops. Mariotto has a population of approximately 2150 people.

A growing community

In the past two centuries, Mariotto has experienced a significant growth in population. Between 1815-20 and 1850, 86 families settled in the hamlet, mainly from Terlizzi (62%) and Bitonto (19%), but also from other areas of Puglia, such as Ruvo di Puglia, Corato, Andria, Molfetta, and Giovinazzo. Many people from the provinces of Cosenza and Naples also chose to settle in Mariotto. This influx of new families has created a vibrant and diversified community, influencing the customs and traditions of Mariotto.
