Bisignano: Discovering the Beauty of Calabria

Hi friends, today I want to talk to you about a small town in Calabria that I recently visited and was surprised by its beauty and unique history. I'm talking about Bisignano, a municipality of 9787 inhabitants located in the province of Cosenza, overlooking the Crati Valley.

Physical Geography

Bisignano is located 350 meters above sea level on the last hilly slopes of the Greek Sila, a fascinating area for the beauty of its landscapes and the variety of its flora and fauna. Here you can find the ruins of an ancient Byzantine-Norman castle and the cathedral, dating back to the thirteenth century but almost completely rebuilt.

Bisignano: historical and natural treasures in Calabria

An Ancient and Fascinating City

According to several historians, Bisignano has very ancient origins, dating back to the 15th and 14th centuries BC. In the fourth century BC, it was one of the main cities of the Bruziorum Confederation, and there are numerous archaeological findings that testify to the importance of the city in that period.

Bisignano was also a bishopric since the early centuries of the Christian era. According to the archdiocese of Cosenza-Bisignano, the Diocese of Bisignano was established between the 7th and 8th centuries. The first documented bishop dates back to 743.

A Territory Rich in Natural Beauties

The town of Bisignano extends over a wide and fertile territory, rich in valleys, hills, and countryside. Numerous plants are cultivated here, such as olive trees, vines, mulberries, and many others. The clear water of the rivers that flow through the area, such as the Crati and the Busento, makes the landscape even more enchanting.

The Beauty of the Cathedral

The Cathedral of Bisignano, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, is one of the architectural masterpieces of the territory. The construction dates back to the thirteenth century, but most of the architectural elements have been redesigned or rebuilt in later epochs.

Inside the church, you can admire numerous works of art of great value, including frescoes and paintings.

An Invitation to Discover Calabria

I was very impressed by the beauty and historical importance of the town of Bisignano, and I feel like recommending you to visit this area during your next vacation in Calabria.

The Calabrian region is full of hidden treasures to discover, breathtaking natural landscapes, and many other surprises that will leave you speechless. Don't miss the opportunity to discover the beauty of this wonderful land.
