Bioglio

Bioglio, the municipality of birch trees in the heart of Piedmont

If you are planning a visit to Piedmont and are looking for a quiet place surrounded by nature, Bioglio may be your ideal destination. This municipality, located in the Province of Biella, has only 903 inhabitants and is located at the foot of Mount Rovella, at an altitude that ranges from 350 meters in Selva to 889 meters at the peak.

Physical Geography

The beauty of the municipality of Bioglio lies in its geographical location, between the hard and imposing valleys and mountains of Piedmont. Mount Rovella represents the highest peak of the territory and next to it, you can visit the Sanctuary of Banchette, in a splendid panoramic position.

Bioglio: the municipality of birches in the Piedmont valleys.

Origin of the name

The name Bioglio derives from the widespread presence of birch trees, called "biola" in Piedmontese. In fact, since the early Middle Ages, the territory of the municipality was characterized by the presence of these trees, which over time have influenced human activities and daily life.

History

Bioglio is an ancient Piedmontese municipality, traces of which are known since the Roman era, but its more recent history dates back to the end of the 19th century when it became a reference point for the textile industry. The largest textile factory in the area, in fact, was located right in the center of the town, as well as most of the houses for the employees.

Symbols

The coat of arms of Bioglio is a heraldic shield on a silver background where a natural uprooted birch tree rises. Its meaning is linked to the history of the locality and to the presence of this tree, a symbol of strength and resistance.

Society

The origins of Bioglio are linked to rural life, the culture of work, and centuries-old traditions, which are still palpable in the life of the town. In recent decades, however, the local community has progressively opened up to tourism and hospitality, so much so that it has become a sought-after destination for those seeking peace and nature.

Demographic evolution

In recent years, the Municipality of Bioglio has marked a slight decrease in the population, going from 1,005 inhabitants in 2001 to 903 in 2019. However, the town continues to be followed with interest by many visitors attracted by its geographical location and the richness of its tourist offer.

Administration

Bioglio is part of the Mountain Community of Val Sessera, Valle di Mosso, and Prealpi Biellesi, an entity that deals with tourist promotion and territorial development. From a political point of view, the municipality is governed by a mayor elected every five years and a municipal council.

Other administrative information

Since 2010, following the abolition of the Mountain Community of Valle di Mosso, Bioglio has been part of the Mountain Community of Val Sessera, Valle di Mosso, and Prealpi Biellesi. In this context, the municipality participates in various programs for tourist promotion and territorial development.
